No, it isn’t too late. If your boiler hasn’t had its annual service yet, November is still a good time to book one. The heating’s now on every day, so any worn part or developing fault is more likely to show up soon, and a service is the best chance to catch it first. It also keeps most manufacturer guarantees valid. Our boiler service and repairs engineers look after homes across Leigh, Wigan and Warrington, and a late-autumn service is one of the most useful jobs we do.
Why people miss the autumn service
It’s easy to let it slide. The boiler seemed fine in summer, the reminder got lost, or the weather stayed mild until suddenly it didn’t. There’s no single “right” month for a service, as long as the boiler is checked roughly once every 12 months.
The real risk is going a whole second winter without one.
What a boiler service involves
A typical gas boiler service by a Gas Safe registered engineer includes:
- A visual check of the boiler, flue and pipework
- Checking the gas pressure and burner operation
- Testing the flue gases with an analyser to make sure it’s burning cleanly
- Inspecting and cleaning key parts where needed
- Checking safety devices and seals
- Looking at system pressure and controls
You’ll usually get a written record afterwards. Keep it, as you may need it if you ever claim on the manufacturer’s guarantee.
Why a service still matters in November
Booking now, rather than waiting until spring, has a few clear advantages:
- Faults are caught while the boiler is under daily load, not sitting idle
- Small problems are sorted before the coldest weeks in December and January
- Your guarantee stays valid if it depends on annual servicing
- A boiler that’s running properly uses fuel more efficiently
If your boiler has been noisy, slow to heat up or losing pressure, mention it when you book so the engineer can look into it at the same visit.
Safe checks you can do until then
While you wait for your appointment, a few simple checks help:
- Look at the pressure gauge and compare it with the level in your manual
- Bleed any radiators that are cold at the top, then recheck the pressure
- Make sure flue terminals outside aren’t covered by plants or anything stacked against them
- Check your carbon monoxide alarm is working
Don’t remove the boiler casing or try to adjust anything inside. If you notice a yellow or orange flame, black marks around the boiler, or a smell of gas, stop using it. For a gas smell, turn off the supply at the meter if it’s safe, open windows and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
Landlords: service and gas safety together
If you let out property, your annual gas safety check is a legal requirement, but it isn’t the same as a full service. Many landlords book both at the same visit. Our landlord page covers the safety side for rented homes.
Servicing in Wigan, Warrington and the surrounding towns
Our area has plenty of older combis in terraced and semi-detached homes, along with larger system boilers in extended family houses. Older boilers in particular can tick along for months before a part gives out on the first really cold week. In places like Wigan, plenty of homes still have the boiler that was fitted when the kitchen was last done, and older boilers are where regular servicing makes the biggest difference.
If the engineer finds your boiler is near the end of its working life, they’ll tell you honestly so you can plan rather than wait for a breakdown.
Frequently asked questions
How often should a boiler be serviced?
Once a year is the usual recommendation from boiler manufacturers and is often a condition of their guarantee. It doesn’t have to be the same month every year, but try not to leave more than about 12 months between services. Your service record helps you keep track of when the next one is due.
Will my boiler be off for long during a service?
Usually not. A standard service normally takes around an hour, depending on the boiler and what the engineer finds. The heating and hot water will be off while the engineer works, then back on before they leave. If a part needs replacing, they’ll explain what’s needed and when it can be done.
Do I still need a service if my boiler is working fine?
Yes. Many faults build up without obvious signs, and a boiler can seem fine right up until it fails. A service checks that it’s burning safely and efficiently, and can spot worn parts early. It’s also usually needed to keep a manufacturer’s guarantee valid.
